because caterpillars are invertebrates ,they have exoskeleton they will get signals by releasing juveline hormone to get rid that exoskeleton

The skin of a caterpillar never grows larger so when a caterpillar gets
too big for its skin the skin comes off with another skin
underneath.Human skin grows so we don't have this problem.
