Just because of low atmospheric pressure it is difficult to breathe at altitudes.

As we go to higher altitude atmosphere is less due to which oxygen levels are low and also our RBC count increases also RBC carry haemoglobin which binds with oxygen in lungs carries it to different parts of body. Since at altitudes there is less oxygen RBC increases and so the haemoglobin in search for oxygen so more and more energy is required which makes us feel breathlessness since our body is trying to adjust our breathing in scarcity of oxygen.

Hope this helps you.
