Why do clouds appear white?

The clouds are white because, luckily for us, the water droplets reflect all the frequencies of the visible light. And when you see a dark cloud, it is simply its shadow you see, as thick clouds doesn’t allow much light to go through.

While on the subject, we often say that a dark cloud is a cloud heavy with rain. Well, it is the opposite; the specific gravity of a molecule of water is less than that of nitrogen and oxygen. ( 1.18 for air and 1.0 for water).
