The prince was called as the Happy Prince because he lived in the castle walls happily without being aware of the grievances in his village. Therefore, he was unaware of grievances and was happy throughout his life. However, when he became a statue and was placed in the centre of the village, he saw the grievances faced by the villagers and felt sad.

'The Happy Prince ' was a prince when he was alive. Being a prince he never knew the sorrow and sufferings of the people. He never knew what tears were for he lived in the palace where sorrow was not allowed to enter. So the couriers called him Happy Prince.
