Why do covalent compounds exist as gases liquids or soft solids?

The bond shared between the elements of a covalent compound is a weak bond or pseudobond which not as strong as the bond shared between the elements of an ionic compound. Hence intermolecular force of attraction is much weaker. So covalent compounds exist as gases liquids or soft solids.
