Why do cyclones occur in coastal regions in India?

The reason they are more prevalent in the coastal areas is because they make landfall on the eastern side of the peninsula. there is an upper air Jet stream that blows in the easterly direction.

The low pressure intensifies in the NW part of the country. A strong pressure gradient gets established. This depression attracts moist air from the high pressure over the arabian sea and southern part of india.
