Why do decayed leaves lose their green colour ?

Due to the loss of chlorophyll...

Explanation:

Chlorophyll in leaves also die when leaves decay. But, leaves also have accessory pigments like Xanthophyll and Carotene. These can live even after leaves die. Hence leaves lose the green color (due to loss of chlorophyll) and acquire yellowish color(due to retaining of xanthophyll).
