Actually volume changes occurs in this soil due to change in weather condition.Swelling occurs excessively due to wet and shrinkage occurs due to dry weather. This soil is affinity to water. This tendency occurs in this soil due to presence of excessive fine clay.cracks are formed due to movement of ground and due to alternative shrinkage and swelling characteristics. Some times this crack is very deep, may be 15–20 cm wide and 2.5 -4 mtr deep.

Hope this answer ll help..

Answer:

Black soil develop deep  cracks during hot weather, which helps in

the proper aeration of the soil. These soils  are sticky when wet and difficult to work on  unless tilled immediately after the first shower

or during the pre-monsoon period.
