Earthworms are good indicators of good soil health. They burrow down and help to aerate the soil. In their lifecycle they leave behind the castings which will help to add some fertilizer back into the soil as well. With the ability to use GMO plants, tillage can be reduced or avoided which allows the earthworms to live in the soil as opposed to the conventional tillage systems where worms do not do very well. This reduced tillage also does a better job of preventing erosion.
