Why do earthquakes and volcanoes carry a huge loss of life and property

As we know that there are natural event which we cannot avoid fully .they are also called as act of god . In such calamities there is always huge loss of life & property because it effects a whole mass & area or some time a whole country eroded by these .
mainly because they are uninformed & unnoticed Or unforeseen well before in time to take safety measures .so we can not control them fully. we only can run away as soon as & as far as possible.
