Earthquakes are usually caused when rock beneath the ground suddenly breaks in the path which it will travel. This sudden release of energy causes certain waves which make the ground shake in terror. When two blocks of rock or two plates rub against each other, they stick a little, and hence due to the increased pressure setup, there increases the chance of earthquake.
