Why do elements form compounds?

All elements have a tendency to make them stable by achieving the nearest noble gas electronic configuration...To achieve this state the elements make compound to stable themselves in terms of their outermost electrons. The compound may be ionic or covalent based on the requirement or conditions of elements participating in making compounds...
