According to the Modern Periodic Law, the properties of elements are a periodic function of their atomic numbers.

The electronic configurations follow a similar pattern in different elements of the same group. Moreover, they have the same valency.

Due to this periodicity in electronic configuration, elements have similar properties.

Hope it helped!
