Eskimos wear snowshoes because they disperses their weight across the surface of the snow, so they don't sink and get stuck. Would you want to sink in waist deep snow and not be able to get out when it's 15 degrees F outside? I think not.

Eskimos wear ski-like footwear. Wider area of the footwear reduces pressure and thus prevents the Eskimo’s feet from sinking in ice.
