Farmers grow leguminous crops between two crops because they have the bacteria  Rhizobium in their roots which convert nitrogen gas in to simpler forms so that the crops can utilize it for growing. By growing leguminous crops between the two main crops, when rhizobium converts nitrgogen molecules into simpler forms, the other two crops present also gets the benefit.

This is the eco friendly way to give the plants the nutrients they need. It is a natural fertilizer, and reduces the need to put chemical fertilizer which destroys the fertility of the soil.
