why do farmers stick an iron staff into the ground while working in the field in rainy season?

the iron staff attracts lighting so if it's raining heavily and ur working on a field then their are high chances of lightning striking you.....so also in some houses in rural areas ....people keep a iron rod outside their house so that the lighting instead of falling on the house may strike the rod......hope it helps
