Fishes and lizards usually lay eggs by external mode of fertilization. The eggs of the fishes and lizards are so small in size that it will not be possible to stay in a definite position and which in turns make hard for sperm to found and fuse them. Whereas, when a large number of eggs make them stick together this makes fertilization possible.

The main reason for them to lay plenty of eggs at a time is because of lack of brooding. Fishes and lizards lay eggs but do not brood over it to protect it. So there is a chance that the predators may attack the eggs. So, it makes sense to lay hundreds of eggs together so that at least a few may avoid predation.  This is basically a tactic to ensure the best survival rates.

Some reasons why fishes and lizards lay hundreds of eggs at a time are:

1. Fertilization takes place outside the body and is highly sensitive to the external factors like temperature changes.

2. All eggs are not fertilized.

3. There are many predators so large number of eggs ensures a higher survival rate.
