Why do fish die when they don't get enough oxygen?

Fish need oxygen to live to perform cellular respiration. If they don't get enough oxygen, they will die as they cannot respire and produce energy. Fish need oxygen to breathe through their gills like humans breathe through their nose and into the lungs.
