Because their body is designed to take dissolved oxygen from water they cannot take directly oxygen from land.

1). Fishes die when taken out of water because the supply of oxygen to their gills is cut.
2). If the gills doesn't receive the oxygen it cannot function properly and eventually the fish will die.
