Why do fungi have been classified separately from plant and animals?

In fact, they are more related to animals, insects because their cell walls contain chitin and not cellulose like in plants. Furthermore, almost all plants have photosynthesis. Fungi don't. ... The fungi cell walls are chemically different from plant cell walls, chitinous vs cellulosic.
