Why do gametophytes die after a fertilization event?

It develops sex organs that produce haploid sex cell.

⚫After knowing this one we should remember about the term Fertilization too.

It is the main event of sexual reproduction in which fusion of male and female gametes takes place. Then it results is the formation of diploid zygote.

⬛☛Now, your question is that why the gametophytes get die !

The answer is :----

"It can't said to be died. It has it's role of formation of new sporophyte and only those parts which do not become the part of sporophyte get degenerated."
