Answer:

Acidic character is determined by the number of H⁺ ions in the solution. The greater the number of H⁺ ions, the more acidic the solution and the pH will be lower. HCl and HNO₃ show acidic characters because they split into H⁺, Cl⁻ and NO₃⁻ ions in aqueous solutions. As they release H⁺ ions, the pH of the solution decreases and becomes acidic.

Alcohols and glucose, though they contain hydrogen atoms, they do not ionize in the  solution to produce H⁺ ions, so they do not show acidic character.

The acidic character of a substance is due to the presence of hydrogen ions [H* (aq) ions] in its solution (water solution). HCl and HNO3 show acidic properties because they produce hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. The solutions of compounds like alcohol and glucose do not show acidic character because they do not ionise (or dissociate) in water to produce hydrogen ions. aqueous
