The forest prevent from flooding because their roots penetrate excess water and avoid from over flowing. Only some amount of water they use and the remaining excess water will be stored as ground water and even there are more no.of trees in forests to stop from getting the areas flooded

The canopy and other vegetation intercepts some rain, and the growth of the plants causes some transpiration that reduces the amount of water available for flooding. However if there is enough rain, flooding will occur anyway. Sometimes this is predictable as the rainfall is seasonal.
