After Qutbuddin Aibak's death, his son became the Sultan. He was however, replaced by Shamsuddin Iltutmish, the son-in-law of Qutbuddin. Right from the moment he ascended the throne he had to tackle many threats from the rival contenders to throne of Delhi. He was able to handle them and succeed in consolidating his position. This is the reason historians credit Iltutmish as the real founder of the Delhi Sultanate.
