There are a couple possible reasons.
Some think because the screeching sound is similar to the sounds made by some animals signaling imminent danger, we instinctively react to it as a sound of warning.
Others suggest that because it resembles the sound of grinding teeth it reminds us of a dental experience.
I personally believe we, as humans, find certain pitches and frequencies grating.

The condition can vary quite a lot. For example, some people find loud noises extremely uncomfortable, some find certain noises particularly annoying, some develop a fear of certain noises, while others experience pain when hearing ordinary sounds. Hyperacusis affects people of all ages and is quite common in children.
