By holding the smoke in your lungs you are accomplishing two things. 1. You are increasing the amount of tar that gets deposited onto the lung tissue. That will speed your route to emphysema or lung cancer quite a lot. 2. you are causing a build up of carbon dioxide and a decrease of oxygen. The high is from your oxygen getting too low. This over time could have an impact on many of your bodies organs including the brain, heart kydneys. Even if you didn't hold the smoke in you still have a very good chance to get emphysema or lung cancer. Neither are any fun. With lung cancer you get to have chemotherapy and all the awful symptoms that go along with it such as losing all of your hair, severe nausea and vomiting, weakness, destruction of healthy cells in your body as well as the cancer cells. Also there is the pain of having part of your lungs removed and the fun of always feeling like you are not getting enough air even when you are on oxygen. Lung cancer spreads very quickly at the point at which it is diagnosed. That's why Superman's (Peter Reeves) wife died so quickly after she was diagnosed. The average survival time after diagnosis of lung cancer is 3 years. Emphysema is at least as bad as far as feeling horrible goes. People with emphysema live quite a long time. They end up on oxygen 24/7 fairly early in their diagnosis. As the disease progresses you become more and more short of breath even with the oxygen on. Usually you will live 15 to 25 years with it. Each year you work harder to breath than the year before. Pretty soon you have to learn special breathing techniques in an attempt to help you get the bad air out of your lungs. Unfortunately that only helps to a very small degree. As your lung tissue is destroyed by the disease you end up with less and less functioning lung tissue. Which means your entire body and all of the organs get deprived of oxygen and slowly fail while you slowly suffocate. Not a pretty picture..
