Why do i know amino acids show amphoteric behaviour?

In neutral amino acid solution the (-COOH) loses a proton and the -NH2 of the same molecule picks up the one. The resulting ion is dipolar charged but overall electrically neutral. This is called Zwitter's ion. Due to this reason amino acids are amphoteric in nature i.e. they donate or accept proton.
