Explanation:

May be because Indian parents love their children way too much and want them to avoid any risks associated with career and health.

1. Risk

Given the population and economic state of the country, there is no denying the fact that making a career out of sports involves tremendous amount of hard work and comes with a fair amount of risk too. Also, the politics involved in these sports at various levels makes it even more discouraging to go for them. Moreover, most of the outdoor sports if not all, come with a risk of getting heavily injured. They just cannot see their children suffering. So they tend to opt for easier options.

2. Orthodox Mentality

Not only sports, any alternative career choices as dance, acting, choreography, singing and music and so on are often disapproved by Indian parents. Most of the people in India posses orthodox mentality. They do not support the concept of alternative career choices. Moreover, if anyone excels in these career choices, they are branded as 'lucky' and born with an 'extraordinary' talent. They fail to see these talents in their own children.

3. Following the masses.

Following the masses is an evergreen trend in India. Society usually does not approve of the people who think differently. Also, forcing children take up the routine subjects of engineering, medicine, management, law etc is easy for parents as it comes with a certain amount of mental peace and security owing to the fact that it offers a 'financially safe' future.

All this said, things are gradually but consistently changing. As the economic state and financial well being of people are improving with time, they have started to think differently.

Whats more important is the communication between the two generations. Children are often secretive in their career interests and thoughts, and seldom let their parents know about their desires. Its important for parents to create an atmosphere of friendliness, understanding and ease so their children are not hesitant in expressing their dreams.
