Why do iodine vapours have violet colour ?

Elemental iodine is actually described to have a violet colour, not purple.
The reason for its violet colour is because Iodine has a characteristic property to reflect that wavelength of visible light( between the range of 4000 to 4460 Angstrom).
Due to the reflection of that wavelength, it can form an image in our eye which is violet in colour.
