why do ionic compound conduct electricity only in the molten state not in the slid state

because they don't have free electrons in the solid state because of which they don't conduct electricity. Actually electricity is conducted in the solids only because of the presence of free electrons
in the molten state the ionises and conducts electricity because in the liquids electricity is passed because of the presence of ions.

Ionic compound conduct electricity in molten state because only then can the electrolyte dissociate into ions thereby allowing the flow of current through it. However in solid state it can't dissociate into ions to let electric current flow through.
