Ionic compounds are formed by the ions which gives rise to large amount of intermolecular forces of attraction and thus makes the compound strong. The ionic compounds are bonded together strongly. So, a large amount of force is required to overcome those forces of attraction. Thus the melting point of these compounds are generally high..
