Why do lichens donot grow in polluted areas ?

This is because Lichens are very sensitive to pollutants like sulfur dioxide etc. which is present in acid rain and curtails the growth and development of lichens. And due to absence of stomato and cuticle, they tend to absorb aerosols which may turn detrimental for them.
