Lichens are the organisms which adapt themselves to extreme climatic conditions. They can grow on rocks, decaying wood logs, tree barks etc. ... They grow along with grasses even above the tree range in the forests. They are also sensitive to SO2 in air.

Explanation:
- Lichens are very sensitive to sulphur dioxide gas (SO), which is released by burning of fossil fuels from automobiles. Delhi is highly polluted city due to number of vehicles running on the roads. Lichens cannot grow in such conditions. Manali and Darjeeling do not have much air pollution as compared to Delhi, so the lichens commonly grow in these places.
