Why do lightning conductors have spikes on them?

Spikes are there to act on the charge formations in the clouds above and our earth is normally at neutral electric potential or zero potential when a good ‘charged cloud’ appears above or on the horizon it induces opposite charge on earth and a temporarily charged earth can spill out or leak charges through spikes to neutralise.

Lightening has strikes which contain electricity and huge energy with them. They will react on many electronic devices mainly Mobile phones.
