For solid, molecules or atoms are packed closely .Inter molecular space is very less.Hence, density is high. But for liquid , molecules are spaced largely. Inter molecular force is also very weak. That results in lower density of liquid. The only exception with this rule is seen in water. Ice floats on water.

In solids molecules are very closely arranged Hence having less inter molecular space and strong intermolecular forces.this makes solids hard and to possess high density. and liquids have lesser density
