Why do magnets reverse polarity when broken?

Answer:
If a piece is broken off a magnet (the size of the piece is immaterial!) the pieces retain their polarity, ie North still points in the same direction. The broken off piece jumps back at the other piece back-to-front because North seeks South and vice versa. If you want to repair the magnet you must use lots of force and a vice to hold the pieces together until your super-glue sets.
Never let your Cobalt magnets jump at hard stuff, it will always cause breakage. I keep mine in matchboxes and stuck to the (outside of) the fridge.
