Male gametes are sperms. They are small, light-weight, motile and are optimized such that they can travel and reach up to the egg in order to fertilize it. As the female gametes are nonmotile. A motile male gamete is needed very much to accomplish the process of fertilization.

Answer: Because Male gamete has to propel through long distance to reach the ovum for fertilization. So the tail helps the sperm to travel through the body.
Explanation: Female gamete produces the larger type of gamete—called an ovum. It doesn't require a tail for fertilization.
