The blood is pumped by a heart with three chambers, two atria and a single ventricle. (4) Mammals and birds have a heart with four chambers that completely separate the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood- it pumps oxygenated blood through the body and deoxygenated blood only to the lungs.

It allows us to send our "dirty" blood to the cleaners-the lungs-and our "clean" blood to the rest of the body without having to mix the two. That system is very efficient.
