Why do many metals become dull in appearance when exposed to air?

metals lose their lustre when exposed to air because they react with various gases present like oxygen and carbon dioxide to form metal oxide and metal carbonate. the surface of some metals acquire a dull appearance when exposed to air because they corrode.
