Answer:

The researchers hoped that the amount of breathing mimicked by the participants was the same as experienced during exercise. The study authors noted that during exercise, people breathe harder, causing the muscles to use more energy to process oxygen.

Usually men are more muscular then women , moreover in today’s world most of the womens are house wife , in these kind of works muscles are most probably not used , and they neither do much physical activity (usually) while on the other side approximately every men does exercise (usually to impress those girls ) moreover boys are usually more active then girls ,so their body has to do some difficult physical tasks at some interval , so the body is typically adapted (a kind of Lamarckism: inheritance of acquired character).. so that in any situation they should be able to supply sufficient amount of oxygen to the cells so in order to do that breathing rate is more in mens ..., you may have studied about secondary sexual character in boys , there is one point in it in which it is mentioned “ widening of chest in boys” this is to increase the rate of respiration....hope you can co-relate ,but if girls will also do such physical activities then it is a possibility that after some generations both will have same respiration rate ,girls can also increase their respiration rate by doing some physical activities and exercises ....

I don’t mean to say that girls don’t do anything in this answer , I respect girls , i just tried to answer your question in simplest way
