The electrical impulses or messages do not travel in one direction they are send first to the spinal cord then travel across it to give the "message" to the brain to the effector organs finally to make a response and dot he action. In some cases of the "messages" don't travel to the brain or get missed the "message" is not delivered and the "pain" is not felt, this condition is known as anhidriosis and congenital insensitivity to pain (Ashley was the rare one who suffered to it) which makes the message to go reportedly to one direction and the pain is never felt.
