Metallic oxides are basic in nature because they react with dilute acids to form salt and water. They also react with water to form metal hydroxides which are alkaline in nature, as these metal hydroxides release OH- ions in solution. ... Therefore non metallic oxides are acidic in nature.

If metals are burnt in air i.e. combined with oxygen by the process of combustion, we get the metal oxide. If this oxide in turn mixed with water, then the resultant solution would turn red litmus blue showing that it is basic. Hence, these metal oxides are termed as basic oxides.
