☆ Metals have a positive valency as they lose electrons to Non-Metals.
☆ Non-Metals have a negative valency as they gain electrons from Metals.
● They react to make their atoms stable i.e. the last shell should have the maximum number of electrons it can hold. (octet state: 8 electrons)
Hope it helps! :)

Metals and Non-Metals react with each other mainly due to the Octet rule. The Octet rule states that the outermost energy level (shell) of an atom cannot have more than 8 electrons .
