Most of the metal do not react with hydrogen because metals form compound by losing electrons and hydrogen also loses the eletrons and forms compounds.so normally hydrogen atom does not accept electrons given by a metal atom to form a compound. But there are few metals( like Na,Mg,Ca,k) which force the hydrogen 2 accept the electrons given by them and form a salt like solid compound called metal hydrides.Thus.most of metal does not combine with hydrogen....

Hope it helps..

Metals do not form cmpound with hydrogen because hydrogen have 1 electron in M-Shell AND most of the metals have 1 or 2 or 3 electrons in their outermost shell.
