Metals react by loosing electrons. Since the atoms in a metal cannot be covalently bonded to the next atom like it happens in hallogens and gases such as oxygen. The electrons are released and then they are “float” within the spaces between the created ions.

as metal have more electrons they have to donations their electrons to gain octet. So metals have free electrons
