why do monsoons break into two branches

Well the answer is not too much clear.
I assume you are talking about "South west monsoon winds" which causes the rainfall in india.
The South west monsoon winds usually breaks in to two branches , the main reason of which is "topographic factors"
This monsoon wind got hit in the western ghats from which it break in to two branches of winds which are named as "arabian sea branch " and "Bay of bengal branch"
