I would say there are many reasons for this. The first is that transportation by
auto is a long time American tradition, and Americans are addicted to their cars. Another is cost factor. A car can take four or five family members the same distance for a little more gas tan one. Four or five plane or train tickets could be considerably more, but you can go much farther. Another reason is that rail transportation in the US is not set up to serve as many places inexpensively as in Europe, where rail is a major transport method.
