Most food chains consists of four steps as animals have different energy requirements. As food chain increases the energy also get reduced and at last the food can be eaten by the animals which have less energy.

most of the food chains have 4 steps because if there is a long food chain then the energy levels decreases. this can lead to extinction of the top carnivore. the extinction can cause ecological imbalance.
