Most liquids that we see around like water, detergents, lemon juice and even milk( lactic acid ) conduct due to the presence of ions. Ions are basically charged particles. All the above solutions that I have mentioned have one thing common — they are all ionized liquids having ions free to move. All of the above solutions are either acidic or basic.

What are acids and bases made of ?

As you know acids contain H ions and bases contain OH ions. These ions determine the conductivity of liquids.

This can be proved by the electrolysis of water. When electrolysis is done on acidified water ,the ions present in water move to their respective electrodes and produce corresponding gases. This proves the presence of ions in water.

Why distilled does not conduct electricity ?

But not all liquids conduct. Liquids like distilled water does not conduct. This is because distilled water is highly purified and thus no impurities ( like salts ) are present.
