mountaineers carry oxygen cylinder with them because when climbing mountains, as the altitude rises the amount of oxygen in the air decreases(due to lack of trees at high altitudes)because of which mountaineers can suffer from dizziness . to avoid the problems caused by deficiency of oxygen, mountaineers carry oxygen cylinder.

Answer:

Oxygen cylinders are necessary at higher altitudes, as the volume of oxygen that enters in the blood from lungs per inhalation reduces due to a decrease in partial pressure of oxygen at higher altitudes.

Explanation:

  • At higher altitudes the partial pressure of oxygen is low.
  • This is because gravity pulls most of the air molecules towards the earth's crust, thereby increasing the concentration of gases near the sea-level.
  • Due to the low partial pressure of oxygen at higher altitude, the force that induces gaseous exchange (inflow of oxygen and outflow of carbon dioxide) along the alveoli-capillary junction in the lungs becomes less.
  • Less oxygen is received by the body per inhalation.
  • This causes a feeling of fatigue, dizziness and nausea.
  • Pure oxygen taken from oxygen cylinders possesses the desired partial pressure to allow proper oxygen supply throughout the body.
